American Academy in Rome
Project Lead & Site Design by 2x4
The American Academy in Rome was founded in 1894 to foster the pursuit of advanced research and independent study in the fine arts and humanities.
Progressive was asked by renowned design firm 2x4 to build out the new Academy website, which features a custom-programmed, database-driven Content Management System (CMS).
True to their artistic bent, 2x4 pushed technical boundaries with their site design. Progressive took up the challenge and hand-programmed 2x4's vision into reality.

A deceptively simple-looking four-column layout masks an extensive backend and finely-tuned page templates.
Detail content is presented on a "stage" designed to appear as an overlay above the homepage.
Page layouts vary according to content section. Here, a two-column layout for news and events.
A separate gallery section called for an entirely different layout to display Rome Prize winners' work.
We worked from a variety of design and technical documents to make 2x4's vision a reality online.
